1995er Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese

We highlight this month the best Spätlese from our extensive “20 Years After” retrospective of the 1995 vintage. Read the story.

The Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Estate is one of the classic Estates which has been producing timeless wines since decades, using some finest and oldest un-grafted vines to deliver its Riesling in a unique “firm playful” style. This sounds contradictory and it is. But it is this tension which has been its recipe for success, especially in the 1990s.

The 1995er Erdener Treppchen Spätlese completely defies time, coming over as both fresh as a daisy and beautifully mature. It was easily the best Spätlese from our extensive retrospective of the 1995 vintage (which included no less than 60 wines from leading Estates) and a true classic in its category.

This 1995 follows handsomely the Estate's 1994er Ürziger Würzgarten Auslese ** which proved one of the highlight of our retrospective of the 1994 vintage published last year.

This golden-yellow wine delivers a stunning nose of flowers, beeswax, lime, some herbs and a touch of licorice. All is there for a greatly elegant wine. Zesty grapefruit lifts the palate up and brings focus and tension. The finish has the force of an Auslese and leaves a great airy and complex feel in the after-taste. This is a massive success from this Estate. Now-2030
