The Auctions held by the Bernkasteler Ring and the VDP / Grosser Ring at the end of September were again not-to-be-missed rendez-vous for any Mosel and Riesling lover. As we reported in our Special Issue - Auction Guide (released as soon as early September), there were some magnificent Mosel wines offered and we feature two examples which were among the highlights at show.
The intense and opulent Auslese by the Schmitges is terrific and can still be considered a comparative bargain.

Erdener Prälat Riesling Auslese *** (Auction)

This offers a huge, complex and yet precise nose of apricot, pineapple, fresh plum, yellow peach and candied citrus. The wine is superbly zesty on the palate, with terrifying intensity and BA weight. The finish is just long and very pure. This is a great and big fruit-driven Auslese in the making. 2019-2039
