This month, we selected another "highlight of the 2013 vintage" from the Issue No 25 published in July 2014, namely from the Dr. Fischer Estate. Johannes Fischer, who has been at the helm of the Estate for a few years now, produced a superb collection of wines in the not al all easy 2013 vintage, especially in the Saar valley. The collection is crowned by a great Spätlese out of the Bockstein, a wine produced in minute quantities but well worth the search. Find out more about the whole collection in Issue No 25 (Part I of the 2013 Vintage Report).

As we also reported in Issue No 25, there are quite some changes at the helm of the Estate since 2014. Nik Weis from the St. Urbans-Hof Estate and Martin Foradori Hofstätter from the J. Hofstätter Estate in South Tyrol in Italy have joined Johannes Fischer on the Estate. They will provide the financial basis for the development going forward (we understand that this concretely involves them financing some of the vineyards and co-investing into a joint operating company, with Martin Foradori Hofstätter focusing on the commercialization while Nik Weis will focus more on vineyards and cellar).

So there are exciting new things to be expected from this corner of the Saar in the coming months and years!

Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Spätlese

A mere 350 liters was produced of this beauty out of the Estate's holdings in the heart of the original Bockstein vineyard harvested at 90° Oechsle. This is still quite closed and marked by fermentation residue and sulfur at this stage but it hints already at delicious scents of peach, tangerine and herbs. The wine is gorgeously playful on the palate and leaves a superb multi-layered feel in the finish. This beauty made in a light drinking Auslese style has quite some upside potential and we would not be surprised if this would be even better than initially expected once it sheds its youthful mantle of reduction. 2023-2038
